There is a kind of stillness that is more than quiet, It is holy. It is the stillness that Scripture invites us into, again and again, using a small but powerful word: Selah. Selah is a pause, a breath, a moment to let truth sink deeper than sound. It is the sacred space between the noise of life and the whisper of God. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
We live in a world that glorifies hurry. Productivity is praised, noise is constant, and our souls are often overstimulated long before the day is done. Yet God’s invitation remains unchanged: Be still.
This is not a suggestion for the spiritually seasoned or the overly stressed. It is an invitation for every believer who longs to breathe again. Stillness is not inactivity; it is intentional surrender. It is the moment when we lay down our striving long enough to remember that God is God… and we are not.
When we practice Selah, we choose to step away from the rush and into God’s rest. In the pause, the weight we’ve been carrying becomes lighter. Our perspective clears. His presence becomes more tangible than our problems. Selah is where fear loosens its grip and faith rises again.
Stillness is not weakness. Oh, no beloved! Stillness is worship. It is saying, “Lord, I trust You with what I cannot control. I trust You to breathe peace into what feels overwhelming.”
I remember when my new beloved husband took me up to Canada to see the family summer house on the lake at the end of our three week honeymoon in the eastern states. As we began an evening of rest, the silence was almost piercing to me. I had never been in a place where sound was no more. In the quiet, I became uncomfortable. On the other hand, my husband mentioned how peaceful it was to him.
When Selah is foreign to us, we quickly turn to our cell phones, or our televisions to fill the void, but God is saying, “‘Pause. Listen. I have something special for you. I am in the stillness of this moment.”
I had yet to learn that stillness is a gift….not earned, but received. God is already waiting in the quiet. All I needed to do… was pause. Every time you choose to pause, you choose to receive the gift that God freely offers: the gift of stillness that restores your soul.
Now, take a slow breath and quiet your thoughts. Then, whisper this prayer:
“Lord, I lay down my striving.
Teach me the beauty of stillness.
Meet me in the pause and steady my heart.
In this Selah, let me know You more.”
When was the last time you paused long enough to feel God’s nearness? I encourage you now: Let the silence be sacred. Let the stillness be healing. Let the pause be the place where God speaks peace over you.
Lastly, let the pause be the place where God speaks peace over you, your life, your job, your home, your family or wherever you need a touch of His precious hand in your life. When you do, you will come face to face with the Holy One, the very Author of Selah!
