The Lost Art of Hearing God in the Secret Place
This message explores the growing loss of spiritual stillness within the modern church and calls believers back to the Secret Place described in Psalm 91. Through personal reflection and biblical insight, it emphasizes the importance of learning to hear God’s still small voice above the noise of culture, religion, and constant distraction.

Where else, besides God’s Word, do you get your heavenly intel from? That is a question the modern church desperately needs to ask again. In a world overflowing with opinions, podcasts, influencers, trends, and endless noise, many believers are being spiritually spoon-fed instead of personally Spirit-led. Somewhere along the way, the art of waiting quietly before the Lord has been pushed aside for performance, schedules, and constant activity.
For me, the answers have always come in the Secret Place. Yes, the one mentioned in Psalm 91.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.” (Psalm 91: 1-2)
For over fifty years, I have discovered that the clearest direction from Heaven comes when I intentionally still myself before God and listen. Not rushing. Not striving. Not multitasking. Just listening. Scripture tells us that God spoke to Elijah not through the wind, earthquake, or fire, but through a still small voice. Yet today, listening for that voice has almost become a lost art within many churches.
Why?
Because in many places, believers are being told what to think rather than being taught how to seek the Lord for themselves. The sheep are constantly directed outward instead of upward. There is a difference between receiving wise biblical teaching and becoming dependent upon man for every spiritual instruction. God never intended for His people to live disconnected from His voice.
The throne room of grace is still open.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice.” That means every believer has the invitation to know Him personally, intimately, and deeply. The Secret Place is where discernment grows. It is where confusion breaks. It is where fear loses its grip. It is where Heaven’s perspective becomes clearer than the noise of culture.
The tragedy is not that God has stopped speaking. The tragedy is that many no longer pause long enough to listen.
Notice the Psalmist says “he who dwells in the secret place; not just the one who seeks out this place in times of trouble or when in need. Dwelling in the secret place means living a life that is intentionally seeking God in every area of our lives. It means listening for His voice before you respond to someone’s inquiry.
When you live with someone, you know a lot about them. If you are married, you know even what they are thinking at times without them saying anything at all. That is what it is like to dwell in the secret place: for we must know God.
My prayer is that as you pause and reflect on what you have just heard, that you will sense the presence of a holy God drawing you closer. May you rediscover the beauty of silence before Him. May you hunger for His voice more than the opinions of man. And may you learn again that true heavenly intel does not necessarily come from people at all, but from the Secret Place where we are called to dwell. Selah.
