How to Keep Your Faith When The Storms Come
There is something about watching a storm on the weather map that gets my attention. You see it hundreds of miles away and think, Well, that's their problem.
Then the weather map shows that storm, or its leftovers heading your direction. Suddenly, everybody becomes a meteorologist. We check one weather app. Then another. Then we look outside. Then we check the app again, just in case the storm received our notification and decided to turn around.
Wouldn't that be convenient? But storms don't work that way. Neither do the storms of life.
A storm can begin somewhere else and still affect you. A decision someone else made, a family crisis, financial trouble, a diagnosis, or circumstances completely outside your control can suddenly change the atmosphere around you.
And sometimes you find yourself saying, "Lord, I didn't start this storm!"
He knows. He also knows how to bring you through it.
You see friend, Jesus never promised His followers a storm-free life. In fact, He said:
"In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." — John 16:33
He did not suggest that storms may possibly come your way, He said that storms will come your way. The disciples learned this lesson firsthand. In Mark 4, Jesus was actually in the boat when the storm came.
Think about that. Jesus was in the boat, and the boat was still rocking!
Sometimes we think that if God is with us, the storm should immediately disappear. But sometimes God's answer isn't to remove the storm. Sometimes He teaches us how to trust Him while we are smack dab in the middle of the waves!
Psalm 46:1 reminds us:
"God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble."
This is why we can stop going to the default response of panic when things surprise us, and realize that our Lord is in control.
When storms come, preparation is wise. Faith doesn't mean ignoring the weather forecast and standing in the backyard declaring, "The Lord is my umbrella!"
We see the wise in God’s Word do just the opposite. Noah built an ark. Joseph stored grain. The virgins kept oil in their lamps awaiting their bridegroom.
Wisdom prepares. However, after we've done what we can, there comes a moment when we have to trust God with what we cannot control.
Isaiah 43:2 says:
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you."
Now, it is indeed not comforting at all to imagine having to wade our way through waters. God does not promise that such an occurrence will never happen, but He says something that the God of Bible often said throughout its entirety, "I will be with you."
I believe I would be negligent not to address that there are storms in life that we may expect that never come. Some people work themselves up into a frenzy, worrying about the impending storm that never transpires. What can we learn from them? I believe that being prepared and trusting God go hand in hand. When we practice such, our lives can be calm in the midst of any trouble.
Maybe that's what your storm is teaching you right now. Patience. Trust. Prayer and Perspective.
Maybe God is showing you that you cannot control everything but you can control where you turn when everything feels out of control. So when the clouds gather, don't confuse the storm with your identity. The storm is an event not your final destiny.
Sometimes the greatest thing we can do in a storm is Selah.
Pause.
Breathe.
Pray.
Listen.
And…. Remember WHO is in the boat. The storm may cross state lines. It may disrupt your plans. It may leave a mess behind. But it cannot change who God is. And it does not get to deliver the final word in our lives, God does.
A Selah Moment
Lord, when the storms around me become louder than Your voice, teach me to be still, trust You, and remember that You are with me, even when the waves are coming and the boat is unsettled. I am so grateful that you never leave me or forsake me.
Selah.

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you."
